The Middle Years Programme (MYP) is a framework that encourages students to make conceptual and practical connections between their school learning and the real world. It is designed to develop active learners and internationally-minded young people, with an approach to education that goes beyond facts and memorization.

The IB MYP is a course of study designed to meet the educational requirements of students between the ages of 11 and 16 years. The MYP provides a philosophical framework with a holistic approach to education and a rigorous framework for assessment. The MYP aims to educate the whole person and to show the impact of each individual on the world around them. The MYP fosters intercultural awareness and the importance of communication. Its goal is to constantly place learning within a context, and to make explicit the relationship between various disciplines.

What is the Middle Years Programme?

The MYP is an internationally recognized educational program that began as an initiative of the International Schools Association. It was a framework designed to meet the specific needs of learners in this age group, grounded in intercultural understanding, communication and holistic learning. Since becoming part of the International Baccalaureate continuum, it has been refined and revised with a focus on inquiry-based education, global contexts, and interdisciplinary study.

MYP Age Group

At Stamford American, the MYP is designed for students aged 11 to 16, from Grades 6 to 10, across Middle School and into the first two years of High School. This developmental period allows students to explore academic subjects deeply while building foundational skills for further study.

Grade 10 students can also begin taking AP courses alongside MYP, giving them an early look at the pathway options available in Grades 11-12.

The MYP is known for its focus on conceptual understanding, interdisciplinary units (IDU), building global awareness and skills development. The programme balances academic development and personal growth, with eight required subject groups designed to ensure a well-rounded combination of knowledge and skills.

MYP Philosophy & Approach

Built on the principles of the International Baccalaureate (IB), the MYP is guided by the learner profile, with an emphasis on developing the Approaches to Learning (ATL) skills. These promote curiosity, creative thinking, empathy, communication, collaboration and resilience. It encourages students to think critically, understand diverse perspectives, and take ownership of their learning.

MYP Core Components

The program includes unique core components such as the Personal Project, interdisciplinary units, and Service as Action.

The Personal Project is completed in Grade 10, and is entirely student led. Here students apply the ATL skills they have developed over their MYP journey, as they set their own Learning Goal, investigate, create a physical product as a result of their learning, and reflect on the process.

Interdisciplinary units occur in each year of the MYP, and act as a scaffolded form of preparation for both the Personal Project and for interactions outside of the school environment. Here, learning in two subject areas is intentionally planned to complement and enhance the other, resulting in a product that synthesizes the two disciplines.

Service as Action also takes place throughout the MYP, where students consider how they can extend their learning beyond the classroom, and what could be done in service of their local, national and global communities.

MYP Curriculum Framework

The MYP curriculum framework consists of eight subject groups taught through key concepts and global contexts. These areas are:

Language & Literature (Usually a student’s ‘mother tongue’ or dominant academic language)
Language Acquisition (Additional/new language)
Mathematics
Science (Includes Biology, Chemistry, Physics, and Earth Science)
Physical & Health Education
Individuals & Societies (Includes History, Geography, Economics and Civics)
Design (Includes Product Design, Digital Design, Coding and Sewing)
The Arts (Includes Theater, Music, and Visual Art)

In Action: Examples of MYP projects/activities

An example of the MYP in Action at Stamford include our Grade 6 IDU, where students combine Economics learning from Individuals and Societies with Science learning to investigate fossil fuel emissions generated by common products, and investigate the environmental and economic impacts of different sustainable material alternatives. Ultimately, after completing cost and benefit analysis and examining carbon emission data, students make a recommendation that they believe is in the best interest of producers and consumers.

In English Language Acquisition, students engage in a Service as Action Units where they connect with local residents in care facilities as pen pals. The students use their developing English skills to write to and read responses from elderly residents and their carers, building connections and positive interactions between the generations.

After completing the MYP, students at Stamford American are well-prepared to choose between two graduating pathways. The IB Diploma Programme (DP) offers the full IB experience in Grades 11-12. The individualized pathway allows students to combine AP courses, BTEC, IB Course Certificates and Stamford college-prep courses into a program tailored to their strengths and goals. With a foundation built on skills, understanding, and global awareness, MYP graduates are ready to take on the challenges of further study and beyond.

MYP Admissions Process

Stamford American International School accepts applications year-round, subject to availability, via our online system. Placement is confirmed only upon receiving an official letter from our enrollment team.

The Student Support Program is currently at full capacity for all grades, and waitlisted applicants will be prioritized if spaces become available. Application outcomes for Language Learners (KG2 – Grade 10) will be released from March for Semester 1 (August – December) and from October for Semester 2 (January – June).
