At Stamford American International School, we believe a well-rounded education extends beyond the classroom. Academic success is just one part of a student’s journey—extracurricular activities in sports, the arts, community service, and STEM play an equally vital role in shaping confident, capable individuals. These experiences cultivate essential life skills such as leadership, teamwork, creativity, and resilience, preparing students to thrive in both school and life.
However, balancing schoolwork with extracurricular commitments requires more than just good intentions. Students must actively practice time management to juggle their responsibilities, while parents play a critical role in supporting their children during these formative years. Parents are in the best position to help students discover their passions, set realistic goals, and manage their schedules without feeling overwhelmed. At Stamford American, we help students navigate this journey by providing structured academic schedules, flexible co-curricular options, and a supportive learning environment.

Here are five practical tips for students and parents to achieve a healthy balance between academics and extracurricular activities. Summary of Contents: |
1. Set a Realistic Schedule
An overloaded calendar can lead to unnecessary stress, but effective planning can make even the busiest weeks more manageable. Students should start by listing all their commitments and prioritizing their activities. Tools like planners or digital apps can help map out tasks and allocate time for classes, homework, extracurriculars, socializing, and more.
At Stamford American, we support students in creating balanced schedules by offering co-curricular activities (CCAs) both after school, allowing them to maximize their time efficiently. Parents can assist by guiding their children on how to set realistic goals and avoid overcommitting. Regular schedule reviews are also beneficial, as they provide an opportunity for parents and students to work together in creating a balanced and sustainable routine.
2. Learn Advanced Time Management Techniques
Maximizing daily productivity involves more than just filling in a planner. Advanced time management strategies can help students maintain focus and efficiency. One effective method is the Pomodoro Technique, which divides work into 25-minute focused intervals followed by short breaks. Another approach is time blocking, where tasks are assigned to specific time slots to minimize distractions. Additionally, identifying peak productivity hours and tackling more challenging tasks during these periods can further enhance efficiency.
Time management is a skill that takes time to master, so students will benefit from ongoing parental encouragement as they discover what strategies work best for them. For example, parents can help break down large projects into smaller, more manageable tasks, making the work feel less overwhelming. Families might also experiment with new time management techniques together and share their experiences. By fostering these habits early on, parents are equipping their children with a valuable skill set that will benefit them well into adulthood. At Stamford American, we foster a structured approach to learning with clear deadlines and a rotating schedule that ensures students have adequate time to complete assignments. Our teachers also work closely with students to help them develop effective study habits and time management techniques.
3. Practice Open Communication
Students who try to manage a packed schedule alone often end up stressed and overwhelmed. However, they don’t have to navigate this process solo. Young learners have a support network of family members, teachers, and mentors who can help. It’s not only fair but also healthy to discuss challenges or potential adjustments with these trusted adults.
In some cases, parents can take the initiative by having regular check-ins with their children. A child struggling to balance their responsibilities will likely appreciate being asked how they’re feeling and whether they need assistance. Fostering open, supportive communication creates a home environment where children feel safe sharing their struggles and working together to find solutions.
At Stamford American, our teachers and counselors actively support students in managing their workload. Whether through one-on-one guidance, or collaborative planning, we ensure students feel empowered to balance their commitments effectively.
4. Quality of Involvement Over Quantity
While a long list of extracurricular activities may seem impressive, true growth comes from meaningful engagement rather than sheer volume. Students should focus on activities they genuinely enjoy, where they can make a significant impact. By committing to some carefully selected interests, they have the opportunity to develop expertise, build leadership skills, and fully benefit from the experience—without spreading themselves too thin.
Children are more likely to make thoughtful, intentional choices when they have open discussions with their parents about their interests and long-term goals. The parent’s role isn’t to push them into every available opportunity but to help them evaluate which activities align with their passions and academic objectives. A “quality over quantity” mindset will help children find fulfillment in their commitments, and they’ll adopt this approach more easily when encouraged by their parents.
At Stamford American, we offer over 350 CCAs across sports, arts, technology, and leadership, giving students the flexibility to explore their interests without overextending themselves. Our approach ensures students can develop expertise in their chosen pursuits while maintaining a well-balanced routine.
5. Make Time for Rest and Relaxation
A packed schedule without downtime can quickly lead to burnout. When creating a daily routine, it’s just as important to schedule rest as it is to plan for productivity. Taking short breaks, engaging in hobbies, or having unstructured free time helps students recharge and improves focus when it’s time to return to work. Quality sleep is also crucial—sacrificing rest to fit in more activities often backfires. In our fast-paced, constantly changing world, it’s up to parents to reinforce the importance of relaxation. Ensuring that everyone in the family has time to unwind each week can include activities like spending quality family time, dedicating portions of the weekend to relaxation, or exploring mindfulness practices together. By framing rest as an essential part of a fulfilling life, parents help their children stay mentally and physically healthy while maintaining balance.

Student Perspectives: Finding Balance at Stamford American
Stella dK – High School Student
“I am a high school student at Stamford American International School and participate in the Ethics Olympiad, Model United Nations (as an executive member), graduation preparation committee, and the U19 Basketball team.
As a student, it can sometimes be challenging to manage both academics and extracurricular activities. For this reason, the school runs clubs not only after school but also during the one-hour lunch break (during which you can participate in a club while eating). This means that I have more time left after school to work on my academics. Personally, I am able to manage both my schoolwork and extracurricular activities by planning out my work and dividing it across multiple days. Since the school works on a rotating schedule, I will never get an assignment that is due the next day, meaning that I have 2 days to complete it. During busy periods I can move some work around to ensure that everything still gets completed. Teachers are understanding and work with you to ensure that you have enough time to complete the assignment, knowing that some extracurricular activities require early dismissal or missed days for tournaments or MUN conferences.
Overall, by working together with my teachers and being able to easily see deadlines on the school’s online platform Managebac, I can effectively plan my work and complete it on time. This allows me to balance both extracurricular activities and schoolwork while still having free time to do my own thing.”
Abhi – IB Student & Varsity Tennis Captain
“Being an IB student, I have learned that time management is not just a skill—it’s a survival tactic. Balancing rigorous academics with my passion for athletics has been both a challenge and a thrill. The IB curriculum demands analytical reasoning, problem-solving, and resilience—all qualities I’ve sharpened not only in the classroom but also on the court. Through diligent planning (and maybe a few too many late-night study sessions), I have maintained consistent academic performance while juggling my extracurricular commitments.
My greatest source of pride is leading the Varsity Tennis Team as captain. Tennis is not just about powerful serves and quick footwork—it’s about strategy, teamwork, and leadership. Under my captainship, our team has celebrated multiple victories, pushing the limits of what we thought possible. More importantly, I have worked to cultivate a stronger, more unified team culture at Stamford, ensuring that future athletes have an even better foundation to build upon. Whether it’s motivating teammates before a big match or leading drills that some might call “tough love” (but I call “necessary conditioning”), being a captain has been a defining part of my high school journey.Beyond the court, I’ve also embraced leadership in academics as the President of the Economics Honour Society. My goal has been to make economics more accessible and engaging for students—after all, supply and demand should apply to knowledge too! Recently, our team launched a YouTube channel, producing multiple videos within just a week. Through mentorship and creative content, we’re helping students grasp complex economic concepts in a fun and interactive way. It’s been incredible to see the community grow, and I hope this initiative continues to expand long after I graduate.
Stamford has given me the platform to push my limits—both academically and athletically. Whether I’m breaking down game strategies or breaking down economic models, I have found a space to thrive. To future students: if you think managing IB, varsity sports, and leadership roles is impossible—trust me, it’s not. Just be ready to bring your A-game (and maybe a few extra energy drinks).”
