How the MYP Works
The MYP provides a consistent framework across Grades 6 to 10 while allowing learning to become more challenging and independent as students grow.
At Stamford, students study Language and Literature, Language Acquisition, Mathematics, Science, Individuals and Societies, Design, the Arts, and Physical and Health Education. Learning is guided by key concepts and global contexts, helping students understand not only what they are studying, but why it matters and how it connects with the world beyond the classroom.
The MYP sits alongside Stamford's American academic standards. This gives students clear expectations for subject knowledge while encouraging them to investigate ideas, consider different perspectives and apply their learning in new situations.
Interdisciplinary learning is also an important part of the program. Students have opportunities to bring together knowledge from different subjects to explore wider questions and challenges, helping them see how ideas connect rather than experiencing each subject in isolation.
Building Independent Learners
Throughout the MYP, students develop Approaches to Learning skills in communication, research, thinking, social interaction and self-management. These skills are used across every subject and become increasingly important as students take on more complex work.
Students learn how to organize their time, evaluate information, communicate ideas clearly, collaborate with others and reflect on their own progress. The emphasis is on helping them understand how they learn, so they can make more informed decisions and take greater responsibility for their work.
In Grade 10, this comes together through the Personal Project. Each student chooses an area of personal interest, sets a learning goal and develops a final product or outcome. The project gives students the opportunity to work independently, manage a longer-term piece of learning and explore something that matters to them.
Service as Action is also embedded within the MYP, encouraging students to consider how their learning and choices can have an impact beyond the classroom and within the wider community.
Assessment and Preparing for What Comes Next
Assessment in the MYP is designed to show what students understand and how well they can apply that understanding.
Depending on the subject, students may demonstrate their learning through written work, projects, presentations, practical tasks and examinations. Teachers use MYP assessment criteria to give students clear expectations and regular feedback, helping them understand where they are progressing and what they need to work on next.
By the end of Grade 10, students have developed a broad academic foundation and a clearer sense of their strengths and interests. They can then move into Stamford's senior pathways, choosing the full IBDP Programme or an individualized combination of AP, BTEC, individual IB Diploma courses and Stamford courses.
The MYP prepares students for that next stage by giving them the knowledge, independence and learning skills to make those choices with greater confidence.
