Learning Through Projects
BTEC is designed around learning by doing. Students work through themed units and demonstrate their understanding through coursework, practical tasks, portfolios and assignments based on real-life scenarios.
This approach gives students the opportunity to apply what they learn in context, develop practical and creative skills, and produce work that shows what they can do, rather than relying mainly on written examinations.
At Stamford, BTEC pathways currently include areas such as Art and Design, Music Performance and Performing Arts: Acting, giving students the chance to pursue subjects where practical experience and portfolio development are especially valuable.
Part of an Individualized Senior Pathway
BTEC does not have to stand alone. Students can combine it with other senior courses to create a program around their strengths, interests and plans after graduation.
A student may, for example, choose BTEC for an area they want to explore in greater practical depth while taking AP, IB Diploma or Stamford courses in other subjects. This flexibility allows students to keep academic breadth while giving more time to areas where applied learning suits them best.
Academic and College Counselors work with students as they consider these combinations and how different course choices may connect with future university or career plans.
Preparing for Further Study
BTEC International Level 3 qualifications are recognized by universities internationally, including institutions in the UK, United States, Canada, Australia and Europe. In the UK, BTEC International Level 3 qualifications can carry UCAS tariff points for university applications.
For students applying to creative, design, music or performing arts courses, the practical work produced throughout BTEC can also contribute to the portfolios and experience they bring to future applications.
At Stamford, BTEC gives students another way to demonstrate what they know and what they can do, while keeping their options open for what comes next.
