Strong Foundations for Growing Independence
At Stamford American International School, Elementary School gives students strong academic foundations while helping them become increasingly confident in how they think, learn and approach new challenges.
Students learn through the International Baccalaureate Primary Years Programme (PYP) alongside American academic standards. They build knowledge across core subjects while learning to ask questions, make connections and apply what they know in different contexts.
As students progress through Grades 1 to 5, they take greater responsibility for their learning and begin discovering the subjects, ideas and activities that interest them most.
Strong Academics, Growing Independence
Elementary School is a time for students to strengthen essential academic skills while discovering more about how they learn. Through explicit teaching, inquiry and opportunities to explore different subjects, they build the knowledge and confidence to take on increasingly complex ideas.

Academic Life
Stamford’s Elementary curriculum is based on American AERO Standards and taught within the framework of the IB Primary Years Programme. The standards establish the knowledge and skills students develop at each grade level, while the PYP encourages them to investigate ideas, make connections and use what they learn.
Core learning includes Language Arts, Mathematics, Science and Social Studies, with digital learning, research and library skills woven through the curriculum.
Students also have opportunities to learn beyond their core subjects through languages, visual and performing arts, physical education and other specialist learning. These different experiences give students more ways to communicate, create and discover interests of their own.
The Woodleigh Campus
Elementary students learn at Stamford’s Woodleigh Campus, where classrooms sit alongside specialist spaces for academic, creative and physical learning.
Facilities used by Elementary students include the library, swimming pool, Stamford Field, Jefferson Arena and Makerspace, providing different settings for reading, research, sport, making and collaborative learning.
Sharing the campus with Middle and High School also means students become familiar with the wider Stamford community before they move into the next stage of school.
Preparing for Middle School
Elementary School builds the academic knowledge and learning habits students need as greater independence and subject specialization begin.
The IB Primary Years Programme develops communication, research, thinking and self-management skills alongside strong academic foundations. In Grade 6, students build on these foundations as they move into Stamford’s IB Middle Years Programme (MYP).
