Language Program
The foreign language program at Stamford provides daily instruction in either Chinese (Mandarin) or Spanish. We believe that to truly grasp a language it is important to have daily reinforcement at differentiated levels.
Daily language lessons begin at the Nursery level (age 2) by learning songs and playing games to help familiarize these young students with a new language and its sounds. As students grow, the program becomes more intensive and students are divided into Core and Extension classes, allowing each student to be challenged at an appropriate level so they can continue to progress. All aspects of a language are taught including reading, writing, speaking and culture.
Throughout the year, key holidays and festivals are celebrated as an integral part of the program with language students learning the cultural background and sharing their learning by presenting at school assemblies and other school events. Additionally, as Teachers are native speakers, they can speak personally about relevant cultural events and aid the development of student understanding.
Students who are learning English for the first time are also supported through our EAL program (English as an Additional Language). Many students also choose to be part of the Foreign Language activities that are available to enhance language development through Stamford Co-Curricular Activities Program.
For additional Spanish Language resources, Stamford recommends:
Las Lilas School, founded in July 2005, is the first and only school in Singapore to be exclusively focused on the teaching and spreading the beautiful Spanish language. Las Lilas officially became the first Associated Center to the Cervantes Institute in Southeast Asia in December 2007 and it is now an accredited examination center for the official DELE Exams. Las Lilas portfolio includes courses for adults and kids at all levels and both group and private instruction. Las Lilas also offers corporate services (translations and interpretations).
