At Stamford, we want our students to be as successful as possible at school; but success in school is not just about academic disciplines.  It is also about knowing how to learn and how to get along with others.  We use the Second Step program as part of our Personal and Social Education Program in our KG2 through Grade 5 classes to teach critical skills. The Second Step program develops skills that will help our students succeed in school and in life. The areas of focus include:

  1. Skills for Learning: Students gain skills to help themselves learn, including how to focus their attention, listen carefully, and be assertive when asking for help with schoolwork.
  2. Empathy: Students learn to identify and understand their own and others’ feelings.  Students also learn how to take another’s perspective and how to show compassion.
  3. Emotion Management: Students learn specific skills for calming down when experiencing strong feelings, such as anxiety or anger.
  4. Problem Solving: Students learn a process for solving problems with others in a positive way.

Our Middle School (Grades 6 through 8) will move into the Stepping Up program and Stepping Ahead program which will additionally cover:

  1. Communication
  2. Perspective taking
  3. Respectful disagreement
  4. Negotiation and compromise
  5. Emotion management
  6. Coping with stress
  7. Decision making
  8. Goal setting
